Following the Super Eagles’ involvement in the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, the Kogi State Government intends to thank Kogi-born goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke and other state delegates for their contributions.
Monday, Kogi State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Anyebe, expressed pride in the Super Eagles’ performance despite the team’s loss to Ivory Coast in the final and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting athletes who bring honor to the state. She also mentioned that a memo has been submitted to Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo proposing a celebratory welcome for Ojo Olorunleke and other Kogi representatives.
The commissioner highlighted youth empowerment and sports development as important administration goals.
The SWAN Chairman in Kogi State, Bishop Aturu, commended the government’s decision to honor the Super Eagles goalkeeper and his team from Kogi. He praised Ojo Olorunleke’s journey from local league performances to representing Nigeria at the highest level.
Aturu stressed the need to address infrastructure decay in the state, particularly the poor condition of Confluence Stadium in Lokoja. He highlighted the importance of providing a conducive environment for sports development and expressed hope that the government would take steps to improve sports infrastructure in Kogi.
In conclusion, Aturu congratulated Ojo Olorunleke, the Super Eagles, and everyone involved in Nigeria’s memorable journey at AFCON 2023.
He emphasized SWAN’s commitment to supporting sports development initiatives in Kogi State and urged the new Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development to prioritize infrastructure improvements and grassroots sports revival to combat social issues.
